The chakras represent seven levels of universal energy. Each one has different characteristics and can be cleansed through visualization for optimal energy and health.

People who are well balanced have chakras that are large, clear, and bright. Unbalanced chakras tend to be duller, smaller and susceptible to energy blockages. The seven major energy points are the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras. They are located vertically along the center of your body. When first learning to master cleansing the chakras, many begin with the root, sacral and solar plexus chakras. Below is an overview of these three base chakras and effective visualization techniques for cleansing them.

Understanding the Root Chakra

This chakra is located at the base of the tailbone and is associated with the color red. Below are the characteristics of this chakra.

  • Sanskrit Name: Muladhara, which means support, root, and foundation.
  • Function: Embodiment.
  • Main Quality: Grounding.
  • Associated Element: Earth.
  • Symbol: Square.
  • Physical Correspondences: Adrenal glands, feet, legs, bone, spine, neck, large intestine.

A balanced root chakra attracts emotions pertaining to safety, security, excitement, mobility, and acceptance of the physical realm and its limitations. Unbalanced energy attracts emotions pertaining to fearfulness, rigidity, restriction, being held back, lethargy, and immobility.

Root Chakra Balancing Exercise: Find something red to hold on to, ideally from nature. Sit with this object for a good ten minutes and visualize yourself resonating with this object. How does the object make you feel? Record your experiences.

Root Chakra Visualization: Sit in a comfortable position, preferably in a chair that has a back. Close your eyes and focus your concentration on the base of your tailbone. See the area glowing as a red square. Inhale deeply and as you do visualize the color getting brighter and the square getting larger. Feel the warm glow throughout your lower body.

Understanding the Sacral Chakra

This chakra is located halfway between the pubis and the navel. It is associated with the color orange.

  • Sanskrit Name: Swadistana, meaning home of the self.
  • Function: Providing a sense of self.
  • Main Quality: Centering.
  • Associated Element: Water.
  • Symbol: Crescent Moon.
  • Physical Correspondences: Ovaries, testes, kidney, and bladder.

A balanced sacral chakra attracts energy and emotions pertaining to autonomy and healthy mood changes. Unbalanced energy attracts emotions pertaining to blocked feelings and poor energy flow.

Sacral Chakra Balancing Exercise: Find something orange to hold on to, ideally from nature. Sit with this object for a good ten minutes and visualize yourself resonating with this object. How does the object make you feel? Record your experiences.

Sacral Chakra Visualization: Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Inhale deeply and visualize breathing in knowledge, courage, confidence, and peace of mind. Exhale and visualize expelling ignorance, fear, self-doubt, and stress. As you breathe, mentally count backward from 300. Feel the weight of the world lifting off of your shoulders. Visualize yourself being light and airy. Visualize yourself being freed from any mental obstacles that hold you back or prevent you from moving forward in your career, spiritual growth, monetary success and personal relationships (including family, friends, coworkers and lovers).

Understanding the Solar Plexus Chakra

This chakra is located at the base of the sternum. It is associated with the color yellow and the astral or emotional sheath.

  • Sanskrit Name: Manipura, city of gems.
  • Function: Supplies energy in the form of heat, enthusiasm and power.
  • Main Quality: Empowerment and Feeling.
  • Associated Element: Fire.
  • Symbol: Inverted Triangle.
  • Physical Correspondences: Pancreas, pancreas, gallbladder, and spleen.

A balanced solar plexus chakra attracts energy and emotions pertaining to laughter, joy, passion, autonomy and a natural flow of fire energy. Unbalanced energy can make one seem uncaring, quick-tempered, possibly violent, and depressed.

Solar Plexus Chakra Balancing Exercise: Find something orange to hold on to, ideally from nature. Sit with this object for a good ten minutes and visualize yourself resonating with this object. How does the object make you feel? Record your experiences.

Solar Plexus Chakra Meditation: Fill your bathtub with water. You may light lavender incense and add lavender bath salts to help you attain total relaxation. When ready, gently ease yourself into the tub until you are sitting upright. You may either cross your legs or let them lay flat on the tub’s floor. Close your eyes and concentrate on the feel of the warm water around your body. Allow your entire body to relax by tensing each muscle for three seconds and then releasing. Start with your toes and work your way up to your calves, thighs, stomach, chest, neck and head. Start to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. With each exhalation, visualize all of your tensions, negative thoughts, and self-doubts dissolving into the water. Relax in this state for as long as you need or want. When, when you are ready, drain the tub. Stand up and turn on the shower and visualize all remnants of negative energy washing off of your body and going down the drain.

I meditate frequently, but I still have a difficult time managing stress. A friend of mine suggested that my chakras might not be in balance. She mentioned your article and suggested I read it for ideas on what to do. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I did the Root Chakra balancing and meditation exercise and the Solar Plexus balancing and visualization exercise for three days each, (three representing the Divine,) and WOW!! I have never felt so good! I feel more focused and positive then I have in a long while, and I thank you for your article.
