Internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, life coach and author, Colleen-Joy Page, shares her wisdom about life after having overcome death.

At the age of four Colleen-Joy Page suffered from a brain tumour and subsequently had to undergo brain surgery to save her life. While she was on the operating table she not only lost her life but also had a glimpse of the afterlife which would guide her along a miraculous quest for wisdom.

Today she still carries the burn mark at the base of her spine as a reminder of the day that she was resuscitated as well as a scar on her head where a tumour the size of an egg had been removed.

This extraordinary woman embodies the essence of wisdom and contribution as she devotes her life towards empowering other people. She spoke to Suite101 in an enlightening interview.

Facing Death to Embrace Life

Page explains that she does not remember the actual near-death experience but had a distinct memory of having gone home during her recovery. "I remember trying to draw home and I drew a tunnel. I experienced a constant homesick feeling of wanting to return to that kind of peace."

She ads that shortly thereafter she started asking the big questions such as "why are we here and where do we come from."

Page says that death is part of her everyday life but not in a morbid sense as one would image.

She explains that facing death taught her the value of life and serves as a daily reminder that life is precious. "When you ignore death you are not capable of being fully alive," she says.

Definition of Intuition

According to Page, intution can only be accessed by going within oneself, therefore she refers to the term as "in-tuition." She elaborates by explaining that it is inner truth, inner guidance and wisdom.

"We are all born with a particular purpose and getting in touch with your inner truth is like finding your own compass."

Page is the author of My Life as an Apple Tree and one of the teachings in the book is that if you do not know who you are, you will not know what your purpose in life is.

"You are who you have always been. Nothing has the power to change who you are . Only you have the power to forget, that is all," she explains.

She ads that when people get in touch with their own guidance, they become all that they were born to be – a fundamental principle in her work.

What Prevents People From Accessing Their Intuition

"One of the main factors that prevents people from getting in touch with their in-tuition is being stuck in the surface mind which can be described as limited and noisy. In addition, it always wants to be right and finds itself in a constant state of polarity," she explains.

According to Page's teachings one should imagine the mind as a sphere and attempt to go deeper than the surface in order to reach the divine mind in the centre which is completely still and full of wisdom. It also does not have any agenda and feels at one with the entire creation.

The other aspects that cause disturbance when trying to access intuition are fear and the ego.

"Fear literally interfears with in-tuition because it acts like static on a radio when you want to tune into your true self." She says that when someone finds themselves in a state of fear and is trying to access their in-tuition, fear will always be the loudest voice and one will not be able to differentiate between the two.

She advices that one should learn to relax and recognize in-tuition as the voice which never tries to be right, which is inclusive and tunes you into your own truth.

How To Develop Intuition

"Make your relationship with yourself a top priority and honour and listen to what comes up within yourself," she teaches.

In addition she prescribes practicing the ABC'S in order to stay in touch with inner truth.

A is for focussing attention inside your (B)ody in the abdomen area to reach the (C)entre of the sphere where you have to (S)tay regardless of what shows up.

Page quotes her monk friend, Radhakrishna who says: "everything when fully experienced, converts to joy, peace or love."

Indeed, Page's remarkable story is a testament to the fact that suffering can be trancended into something beautiful. She reminds people not to take suffering personally and says that it is just another part of life as is death.

She eloquently concludes: "when we face the mountains of our life's struggle, the mountain is not to make you feel small, but to remind you to find the part of you that is equal to the mountain."
