Affirmative Priorities for Life and Living

Developing A Positive Attitude for the Rest of Life

Mar 6, 2009 Mario Carini

No matter how bad things are, there are always opportunities in every situation. Some people refuse to give up on life and prefer to live the positive trip.

The world today is a negative world, filled with hate, greed and corruption. For many in the impoverished world, survival depends on finding enough food to stave off starvation. In the developed world, government and corporations prey on the health of a gullible and ignorant populace in order to make profits. And with a decaying economy, it's hard to see anything good in the future.

What is it that makes one man continue against all odds while another, along with the majority, just sigh in the face of chaos and accept their fate? Anyone who has ever been successful has a code of conduct he lives by. In economic prosperity he is indistinguishable from the majority as everyone enjoys the fruits of growth. But it is in a recession, a depression and inflationary times that he stands out. What is it he has that others don't?

A Positive Attitude

It's too easy to focus on all the negatives. They appear overwhelming. But the successful approach setbacks as learning tools. So long as life exists, trouble will follow. But nothing can be learned in an economy of constant growth. When the economy sours the majority react with anger, fear and hopelessness. But none of these emotions build character. Rather than focus on attacking their problems, they look to find solutions elsewhere, seeking out a savior, often a selfish dictator that leads them down to further destruction. A positive attitude is a great trait to have, however, it won't help much for the man or woman who isn't prepared to get off the couch and do something to improve on the existing situation.

An Affirmative Plan

Economic prosperity grants everyone the chance to coast along without taking any time to set realistic goals and work for them. But chaos has the benefit of forcing a rethink of priorities. The man who lives the positive trip not only has a goal in mind, but has a plan to reach it. In economic uncertainty he makes changes to the plan so he can continue to steer toward what he wants. When man first went to the moon, his spacecraft often strayed off course, so it was necessary to make the corrections to keep the goal in sight. So it is with life. A dead-end job, foreclosures and losses to investments and savings require mapping out a new direction. Everyone from infancy onward wants to be rich and comfortable and there are many roads to get there. Sometimes a new career is necessary and in these difficult times it's one of the best ways to get started. Once the recession is over the graduate can be assured of a good job.

Affirmative Action

It's the only way to get out of the doldrums. Drifting with the tide with a “wait and see” outlook won't keep anyone away from the rocky shoreline. It's necessary to find a safe harbor and steer toward it. If the attitude and plan is in place, only inaction will make the groundwork useless. A well focused desire won't make problems go away immediately, but they will not appear so overwhelming. It's making the start that produces the momentum and enthusiasm to reach the goal. It becomes easier and produces excitement at every step along the way. It is the mere act of doing something, not the achievement of the goal that gives a man the reason for living.

So live the positive trip. Focus on the plan and act on it. The economy will not rebound if the majority see no hope and do nothing to change it.
