Predicting The Future Using Dreams

How To Tell If Your Dreams Are Prophetic

Mar 22, 2009 Joanna Karpasea-Jones

People throughout history have tried to give predictions through dreams. It has even been mentioned in the bible, but how can you tell whether a dream is prophetic?

Joseph with his coat of many colors, predicted a famine through one of his dreams and in doing so, saved the villagers by storing up supplies of food in advance.

Joan of Arc foresaw her own death in a dream and the famous Albert Einstein developed his theory of relativity through a dream, but if you're new to the study of dreams, you may not know how to tell the difference between a normal processing dream and a prophetic or pre-cognitive dream.

Processing Dreams

Processing dreams are usually a series of images or symbols of activities you have done during the day, or even your fears if you have been worrying about something. They aren't in any particular order and are random.

Most of these types of dreams are in black and white, although sometimes a person does dream in color.

Nightmares

These are manifestations of fear or healing from trauma and are rarely prophetic, although sometimes these "bad dreams" may contain a warning.

Balancing Dreams

If you have been hoping for that pay rise or promotion at work and you dream you had a job offer, chances are it isn't prophetic. It may be what Sigmund Freud described as "wish fulfillment" - you want something badly so you dream that to have it to balance your emotions.

It can be difficult to tell, as occasionally something you think is wish fulfillment turns out to be true. If you keep a regular journal and write notes, you will be able to see which ones come true and if there is a pattern to it and from that you can develop your own intuition for which ones are wish fulfillment and which ones are prophetic.

Pre-Cognitive Or Prophetic Dreams

There are a number of signs that point towards a dream being pre-cognitive. These are:

  • Being in full color and very clear
  • The sequences being ordered so it has a defined storyline with a beginning, middle and end
  • It is easy to remember after you wake. If you've forgotten it within minutes of waking up, the chances are it wasn't important
  • You are given clear messages from people in your dream, or dates.

If you've had a dream that sounds like this, make sure you journal it and record any messages or dates you are given so you can confirm later that it actually was prophetic.

Why Would I Want To Know My Future?

Using dream divination can be useful. It can help you make decisions if you have an idea of the outcome of a particular path.

A prophetic dream can be a warning to you to be more careful, for instance, to take your car to the garage because it is going to break down. If you are having relationship difficulties, you might be alerted to this through dreams which would give you time to intervene and avoid a split up.

If you're going through a bad time, seeing happy situations in your dreams can help you look forward to your future. Ultimately, studying your dreams helps you to know yourself better and that can only be a good thing.
