Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams – or the WILD technique – is a powerful lucid dreaming technique created by Dr. Steven LaBerge of The Lucidity Institute.

It is an advanced method for people who are adept at meditation or want to induce the out-of-body experience.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is the ability to become conscious within an unconscious dream world. This transforms the dreamscape into a vivid alternate reality, where everything the dreamer perceives ( sees, hears, feels, tastes and even smells) is as authentic as waking life.

Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams are used to rehearse real life events, re-live memories, meet up with celebrities, fulfill wild fantasies, or simply explore the unconscious dream world.

It is scientifically proven and accessible to anyone willing to practice the techniques.

The WILD Lucid Dreaming Technique

Tibetan Buddhists developed the concept of Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams over 1,000 years ago, in the form of Dream Yoga. They used this philosophical practice to achieve insights and epiphanies, with the ultimate goal of dissolving the dream state and observing the purest form of conscious awareness without any distractions.

This Mind Awake/Body Asleep method of becoming lucid was optimized for laymen by Dr. Stephen LaBerge of The Lucidity Institute. It teaches anyone how to enter a meditative state, put the physical body into a sleep state, and guide the conscious mind directly into a lucid dream.

Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams

There are several steps to performing the WILD technique for lucid dreams.

First though, get 4-5 hours of deep, non-REM sleep by setting an early alarm. Then, follow the following steps to achieve a wake initiated lucid dream.

  • Step 1: Relax The Mind and Body – Enter a light state of meditation by focusing on breathing and relaxing every muscle in the body. Then repeat the mantra: “One. The next scene will be a dream. Two. The next scene will be a dream. Three...” etc.
  • Step 2: Observe The Hypnagogic Imagery – After 5-10 minutes, hypnagogic imagery will appear behind the closed eyelids. Observe it, play with it, or ignore it. Do whatever feels best to keep the conscious mind entrained while allowing the body to relax deeply.
  • Step 3: Fall Asleep Consciously – Hold on to this thin strand of awareness while the body falls asleep and enters sleep paralysis. This may or may not be noticeable. At first it may seem surprising, or even scary, but it is not dangerous. Ignore any sounds or vibrations and focus on staying completely relaxed.
  • Step 4: Enter The Lucid Dream World– Soon, the body will be completely asleep. There are two ways to enter a lucid dream from here. Firstly, simply move into the scene by allowing it to become three-dimensional. Alternatively, imagine having a separate physical body and dream body, then sink, float or roll out of body.

The WILD technique is not aimed at complete beginners due to the difficult nature of falling asleep consciously, but once mastered, this method can yield many lucid dreams on demand.
