Every person has experienced a time when life truly sucks. Print off the following list and keep it handy as a reminder of ways to cheer up when things get tough.
There are hundreds of reasons for feeling down and unhappy, and believe it or not, there are just as many ways to cheer up. Some of them are easy; some are more difficult. But if you want to shake that bad feeling that’s pulling you down – you can. Don’t just glance through these. Take the time to complete some of them, completely and fully. Give yourself a chance to really start feeling better. 1. Drink a Big Glass of WaterAnd keep drinking water all day long. Dehydration is not only bad for our bodies; it’s bad for minds. Give your body what it needs to take care of itself. Don’t start this journey to feeling better without a full tank of gas. 2. Get Enough Oxygen: BREATHEConvinced you don’t need to think about breathing? Go somewhere private, lie on your back, and put a book on your stomach. Each time you breathe IN, that book should go UP. As your diaphragm expands, it pulls more oxygen into your lungs. If your stomach doesn’t go out when you breathe in, you are breathing only with your chest, which does not pull in enough oxygen. Start breathing right and give your body the oxygen it needs to take care of itself. If the body starts feeling good, the mind and spirit are soon to follow. 3. Identify the ProblemDon’t just search the Internet for distractions. Take a moment to identify what is bringing you down. Once the problem is identified, execute some powerful problem solving skills: brainstorm solutions, weigh those solutions, execute a solution, and re-evaluate. This may not be easy, but it’s one of the strongest ways to truly cheer up. 4. Be RealisticIt’s not necessary to be positive or optimistic; just be realistic. People tend to focus on and exaggerate the negative. Stop doing that! Be realistic. There may be real problems in your life; but there are likely real solutions as well. Stay calm and be honest about the situation. Stop playing the “What if” game and start playing the “Right now” game. Take control and be realistic. 5. Have FunRemember what fun is? Brainstorm all the ways you know how to have fun – watching movies, playing board games, playing video games, playing with the dog, chasing your partner around the house, flirting, doing puzzles, having a hobby, dancing, laughing at stand-up comedy, painting, drawing, doing crossword puzzles, window-shopping, swimming, roller-skating, writing letters, e-mailing people silly jokes, doing origami, playing a sport, going out, cooking a homemade meal, lighting candles, taking a bubble bath with bath toys, arm wrestling, throwing a party, going for a drive, going bowling, spending $5 at an arcade, meeting a stranger, walking around downtown, doing hand-stands, singing karaoke, connecting with friends….this list of fun things to do in this world is endless. Make your list. Start having fun again. This is just a start to the hundreds of ways to cheer up and start feeling better. The real key to getting out of that funk is really wanting to change what you’re doing right now. It’s going to require effort, movement, energy, and time. But it will be worth it when you start experiencing that state of happiness again. For Some More Ideas:
